The Piedmontese area located between the Langhe, Roero and Monferrato is certainly a pearl of enchantment, which nature lovers cannot miss. Between harmonious hills, breathtaking valleys and vineyards as far as the eye can see, this area is a perfect blend of tradition and culture, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. With its typical products, Roero, Langhe and Monferrato stands out as a destination for sustainable, zero-km food and wine tourism. Here you can enjoy sweet hazelnuts, delicious cheeses, rare white truffles and renowned wines, including the famous Roero Arneis Docg.

Roero: between natural canyons, marine fossils and slow itineraries

Roero is certainly the less known area than the more famous Monferrato. It’s located in the north-eastern part of the Cuneo province, it winds through a labyrinth of hills, partly still wild, modeled by nature in an extraordinary way. The characteristic Rocche del Roero, in fact, resemble the overseas canyons, created about 250,000 years ago by the movement of the Albese river. These suggestive natural monuments are the picturesque background of numerous paths surrounded by greenery, which can be traveled on foot or by mountain bike.

In the Rocche del Roero Ecomuseum, a real “en plain air” museum made up of itineraries of varying difficulty, you can choose from a series of experiences in direct contact with nature. Immersed in canyons up to a hundred meters deep, more or less demanding treks for all types of travelers expand. Excursions with professional naturalistic guides, routes with audio guide or picnics in the green with excellent wines and typical dishes of the Langhe and Roero cuisine, famous all over the world. The Roero was an area entirely below sea level, which is why it is still rich in marine fossils, such as fish, plants and shells: little treasures that anyone can find during a walk.

Walking inside the Rocche del Roero

Walks through the Roero fortresses are the ideal way to discover this beautiful hilly area between Alba and Turin. You can walk immersed in centuries-old chestnut woods, cross corners of unspoiled nature and discover historical uniqueness, choosing from numerous paths. The stops are an opportunity to taste the typical dishes of local cuisine and the excellent products of the Langhe and Roero, famous all over the world. Not to be missed, the Religious Path, which winds through woods and vineyards, takes you to all the pilgrimage points on the sacred mountain in less than two hours. Two other very suggestive slow itineraries are: the Path of the Wolf, which crosses ancient villages, and the Path of Apiculture, along which you can admire two masonry apiaries, dating back to the 18th century, unique of their kind in Europe.

Roero castles

Do you want to experience a real journey through time? Between ladies and knights, the tour of the Roero castles is a unique and unforgettable experience. The medieval fortresses in the area are truly numerous, among which we recommend:

-The Guarene Castle, declared an artistic heritage of humanity by UNESCO
-The Magliano Alfieri Castle with its magnificent plaster ceilings;
-The Castle of Govone, with its refined English garden;
-The Castle of Cisterna d’Asti, with an impressive Museum of Arts and Crafts of yesteryear inside;
-The Castle of Monteu Roero which offers a breathtaking view of the hills of the area;
-The Castle of Sanfré and its sixteenth-century frescoes.

Furthermore, for history lovers, the Castle of Monticello d’Alba, a stone’s throw from Alba, is a must-see. One of the best preserved medieval structures in the area, once the residence of the noble Roero Monticello family. A splendid English garden, designed in 1827, surrounds the entire hill 09. The architectural peculiarity of this structure resides in the three imposing towers that are distinguished by the shape of their bases: one square, one round and the last octagonal. A real adventure to discover nineteenth-century customs and traditions.
